Forty-eight scored West Elm reviews give the widest quality gap of any brand on this site: 8.6 on the Emmerson dining table down to 4.5 on the Peggy sofa. Those two sit in the same catalogue at overlapping prices, which is the whole problem with buying West Elm by reputation.

The good West Elm is very good. The Emmerson is solid reclaimed pine throughout with no particleboard and no veneer, and five-year owners report it looking better than on delivery day. Kiln-dried frames show up across at least eighteen of the products we have reviewed, and the lighting we have scored holds up well. The bad West Elm is the Peggy: sinuous springs at a price where hand-tied belongs, an engineered-hardwood frame with documented joint failures, and tufting buttons that failed within weeks. West Elm's answer was to mail owners a button-repair kit, and staff reportedly described one to three years as the expected lifespan under light use.

Sinuous springs appear in at least eleven of the upholstered pieces we reviewed, and veneer in at least thirteen. Neither is disqualifying on its own, but at West Elm's prices both deserve checking before you order, because the catalogue does not price by construction quality in any consistent way.
