IKEA POÄNG Chair

Community Sentiment:Tied· 11 owner & community opinions

Both chairs have strongly positive long-term communities, with different complaint patterns. POÄNG sentiment is mostly positive across r/IKEA, r/ThriftStoreHauls, and Houzz — the divide is body-fit (the knee-above-hip sit position works for some, fights others) and the casual aesthetic. Decade-plus owners are common; thrift-store finds are a recurring theme that speaks to durability. STRANDMON sentiment is also positive long-term, but with a sharper firmness divide — owners who want embracing head support love it, owners with existing back pain often don't. The Djuparp velvet's non-removable cover draws specific complaints from owners with kids and pets. Cross-shoppers within the IKEA reading-chair decision typically pick POÄNG for value and versatility, STRANDMON for long-session comfort and the upscale look — both legitimate decisions for different rooms.

The POÄNG and the STRANDMON are IKEA's two most-shopped reading chairs, and the buyer question between them is one of the most-Googled IKEA decisions of the last decade. Both have decades-long catalog runs, both have devoted r/IKEA communities, and both score above 7.9 in our individual reviews. The difference is that they solve very different problems — and once you understand which problem you actually have, the answer is usually clear.

This piece exists because we've reviewed both individually — see our IKEA POÄNG Chair Review and our IKEA STRANDMON Wing Chair Review for the deep-dives — and the same r/IKEA threads surface in both, with owners specifically debating which to buy. The trade-offs are sharp enough to give a useful answer rather than a both-are-great hedge.

Short version: the STRANDMON is the more comfortable chair for sustained leaning-back reading, with a tall traditional wing-back silhouette that delivers real head and lumbar support — at $399 it's also the more upscale-looking pick by a wide margin. The POÄNG is the better-value, easier-to-place, and structurally more durable buy at $149, with a bentwood-spring action that owners genuinely love but a lower seat profile (knee-above-hip) that doesn't suit every body. If you want a permanent reading chair and you sit in it for hours, buy the STRANDMON. If you want a versatile occasional chair that can outlast multiple apartments, buy the POÄNG.

The Frame & Construction Difference

The POÄNG's frame is the unusual story. Layer-glued birch veneer — thin sheets bonded in alternating grain directions around a curved form — produces a chair that flexes under load by design. The slight springy rock when you sit down is the structural feature, not a flaw, and it's the reason 30-year-old POÄNGs routinely turn up at thrift stores still functioning perfectly. r/ThriftStoreHauls regulars report finding 1990s-vintage POÄNGs in solid structural condition. The frame itself outlasts apartments, relationships, and design preferences.

The STRANDMON uses a traditional solid-wood and plywood frame — heavier, sturdier in the 'doesn't move when you sit down' sense, and structurally rated for daily heavy use. r/IKEA owner reports document 5–10 years with no frame issues; one Reddit owner reported standing on the arms as a makeshift ladder without a wobble. The 1.5 lb/cu.ft. polyurethane foam in the back and wings is the long-term wear point — it softens noticeably over years of heavy daily use, where the seat-cushion foam at 2.2 lb/cu.ft. holds up better. Frame is covered under IKEA's 10-year armchair warranty; foam compression is not.

Both frames are genuinely good for the price. The POÄNG's bentwood spec is more unusual and the long-term track record is exceptional; the STRANDMON's traditional frame is structurally heavier and reads more substantial in the room.

Sit Position: The Single Biggest Difference

This is the decision point and where most buyers should make the call. The POÄNG sits low — your butt sits below your knees — and the cushion angle pushes you slightly back into the curved frame. It's a casual reading position that some bodies love and some bodies fight. r/BabyBumps owners describe the POÄNG as comfortable for short sessions but uncomfortable over longer reads, with the knee-above-hip geometry the recurring complaint. Houzz owners report the same divide: many love the chair, others say their bodies just don't fit the curve.

The STRANDMON sits at a more conventional chair height with a tall, embracing wing-back. The wings provide genuine head support — multiple owners specifically cite falling asleep in it, breastfeeding in it, and using it as a long-session reading chair. The trade-off is firmness: r/IKEA owners describe the STRANDMON as 'VERY firm' on first sit, and one Reddit owner specifically warned that 'You might not ever be comfortable in it if you already had back pain with the POÄNG' — different bodies, different chairs.

If you sit for more than 30 minutes at a stretch, the STRANDMON wins this on geometry alone. If you use the chair primarily for occasional sitting, the POÄNG's casual-low position is fine and the value gap matters more.

Style: Scandinavian Minimalist vs Traditional Wing-Back

The POÄNG's curved birch frame, gently angled cushion, and clean Scandinavian proportions have remained essentially unchanged since 1976. It fits across mid-century, contemporary, minimalist, and transitional interiors without requiring stylistic commitment from the room. The birch finish is warm and grain-visible — a more sophisticated material read than the chair's price point suggests. It is, however, unmistakably a POÄNG; the silhouette is recognizable enough that some buyers prefer the STRANDMON for the 'doesn't look like IKEA' factor.

The STRANDMON is the chair that reads as $1,200+ traditional furniture at a fraction of the price. The tall back, rolled wings, and tapered legs photograph as well in classic, transitional, mid-century, and farmhouse rooms as in Scandinavian-modern ones. The Djuparp dark-green velvet became Pinterest-iconic for a reason — it's the colorway that most fully delivers on the 'looks expensive' promise. Multiple r/IKEA buyers specifically cite the STRANDMON as the IKEA piece that draws compliments from people who don't otherwise like IKEA.

Cover & Maintenance

POÄNG cushions are interchangeable and replaceable — IKEA sells frames separately for around $60, and cushions in fabric, leather, and various firmness levels are all in the regular catalog. Owners on r/IKEA report upgrading the cushion to a thicker variant after years of use; the modular cushion architecture is part of the chair's longevity story. Cushion covers on most variants are removable and washable.

STRANDMON covers are mixed. The Nordvalla and several other variants have removable, washable slipcovers — the durable long-term path. The Djuparp velvet (the iconic dark-green colorway) is non-removable, which makes it the prettier short-term choice and the riskier long-term one. r/IKEA owners with kids and pets specifically complain about staining on the Djuparp variant; one owner reported permanent water stains. If you want long-term flexibility, choose Nordvalla or another slipcover-compatible variant; if you want the iconic look, accept the cover risk.

Price & Value

POÄNG: $149 with cushion, with frames available around $60 separately. This is one of the most defensible furniture purchases in any catalog. The frame outlasts ownership, the cushion is replaceable, and r/ThriftStoreHauls regulars report finding decades-old examples for $35 still in solid condition. The per-year cost approaches zero on long-term ownership.

STRANDMON: $399 fabric, $499 leather. Comparable retail wing-back chairs from Pottery Barn, Pier 1, or West Elm start around $899 and run past $1,500 — the STRANDMON is among the cheapest serious wing chairs on the market. Long-term ownership reports tilt strongly positive, which makes the per-year cost compelling even if the foam softens.

At entry, the POÄNG has an unbeatable value gap. Adjusted for what each chair actually delivers, the STRANDMON's value is also genuine — you're paying 2.7× the price for a chair that solves a different problem (long-session embracing comfort) and reads as substantially more upscale. Both are correct choices for the right buyer.

Comfort Split: Who Each Chair Actually Fits

POÄNG owners want a casual, springy reading chair that doesn't ask much of the room or the budget. They use it for medium-length reading sessions, nursery rocking (the bentwood frame's natural give is genuinely useful here), and as a versatile occasional seat. They accept the lower sit position and the casual aesthetic. Owners who don't fit the curve typically know within the first hour of sitting.

STRANDMON owners want a permanent reading chair with real head and lumbar support, and they care about the chair anchoring the room visually. They sit for hours, often with a book or a baby. They've accepted the firm initial feel and the foam-softening long-term wear pattern. Buyers with existing back pain should test it in store — the STRANDMON's firmness is genuine and the chair won't be right for every body.

Who Should Buy Each

Buy the STRANDMON if: you want a permanent reading chair, you sit for long sessions, you want real head support and an embracing wing-back, and the chair anchors a room. Choose Nordvalla or another slipcover-compatible variant for long-term flexibility, or accept the cover risk for the iconic Djuparp velvet.

Buy the POÄNG if: you want a versatile occasional chair, you value the bentwood-spring action (especially for nursery use), you want the most defensible long-term value in the IKEA catalog, and the casual sit position works for your body. Consider upgrading to a thicker cushion if the standard one feels lacking.

Buy both if: you have the room. They genuinely solve different problems — the STRANDMON for long-session reading, the POÄNG for occasional use, nursery, or guest seating. Multiple r/IKEA owners report having both, in different rooms, for different functions.

Great find OP. I suggest upgrading the cushion to the thicker ones. We've had this chair since 2002. Replaced and upgraded the cushions 2x. It's still a staple in the living room and comfy for reading.

I have this chair, I was gifted it as a hand me down when I moved away to university. Honestly, it's meh. For reading/studying purposes while in school, it was comfortable for a while, but then would get uncomfortable. I think it's partially because your butt sits lower than your knees.

I have 2, and they are comfortable and durable. A friend of my niece came over for a weekend and sat in one. Actually ROCKED a bit in one (it's the bentwood that gives it a litle rocking motion if you press on it). He's tall, muscular, I was freaking out! Hoping he wouldn't break the chair... The chair was fine afterwards.

we bought a poang chair 20+ yrs ago for the nursery of our 1st child — that chair is still in the bedroom!! many, many, many stories were read from that chair and it was great since it's wider — 2 kids could also fit onto each side of the lap! certainly is durable!

Sitting in my Yellow Strandmon right now. Best chair to fall asleep in. The firm "wings" really keep your head supported.

I've had my dark blue one for about eight years and it's super sturdy. I have even stood on the arms a few times when using said chair as a makeshift ladder. Not a single wobble.

Had several Strandmons in different colors, none ever had peeling. BUT STILL the fabric is the most delicate stuff I've ever seen when it comes to stains. It literally stains from pure water. Permanently. It's a shame. If they weren't so irresistibly fancy..

The STRANDMON has been one of IKEA's longest-running 'looks expensive' pieces — a traditional wing-back silhouette in IKEA's catalog at a fraction of the price you'd pay at a traditional retailer.

I love my Strandmon, but I don't think it would be great for sitting at a desk. It's more suited for leaning back into the chair and getting comfortable with a book. Honestly as much as I love IKEA for most things, my work-from-home desk chair is a nice padded, rolling office chair from Costco.

There really isn't a breaking in on that chair. You might not ever be comfortable in it if you already had back pain with the poang. That said, you often see them shown with a small pillow, which might help you get some lumbar support.

I've had two Poangs, and for me, they're just great. I do not think they're good-looking, but I don't care because as a non-stop knitter, I've never had a chair that suits me better. Craigslist typically advertises lots of them, so I'd advise going that route instead of buying new.
