SÖDERHAMN ships in seven main pieces meant to be mixed: 1-seat section, 3-seat section, corner section, chaise, ottoman, sleeper, and armrest. Because it's modular, one owner's sofa might be three pieces and another's seven, and every piece needs its own cover. Vendors quote per piece, not per sofa, and ordering for the wrong configuration is the mistake buyers make most. Count the modules, note which sides carry armrests, and confirm with photos before you order. Most vendors will ask for photos anyway.

Bemz, the premium custom-fit route

Bemz is the established premium IKEA-cover vendor and the only one with a 100-plus fabric library. EU-based, custom-cut from a digital pattern they keep for every IKEA modular configuration, with a 3-year guarantee against seam failure. Pricing is the steepest of any vendor: $350-550 for a 3-seat section in standard fabrics, $550-700 for velvets and linens, and full sectional configurations reaching $1,200-2,000 at the top.

Dominique Gebru documented her Bemz install on her blog and was blunt about why she did it: "The covers we bought it with were fine, but they weren't anything special." The upgrade bought better fabric than IKEA was offering, not a better fit. Trustpilot backs up the durability claim, with multiple customers reporting Bemz covers surviving 10-plus years of regular use.

Comfort Works, mid-tier and available on Amazon

Comfort Works hits the best price-to-quality balance here. Australian company, ships worldwide, sold direct and through their Amazon storefront for select configurations. Expect $200-450 for the same configurations Bemz quotes at $350-700. The fabric library is narrower, roughly 30-40 options against Bemz's 100-plus, but it covers what people want: cottons, linens, performance fabrics, durable weaves.

Several blog reviewers have installed Comfort Works covers and they agree on fit and on the install itself. Scoops at Deuce Cities Henhouse: "It took me a few hours to replace the cushion covers. The Soderhamn is a very tailored sofa, and because of that it requires some disassembly to replace the covers, but it's all so worth it." The Neat n Tiny review says the same about fit: "The Comfort Works covers fit perfectly, even more snuggly than the original IKEA covers."

If you have a 3-seat or smaller SÖDERHAMN in a neutral color, buy Comfort Works. The money you save against Bemz usually pays for a fabric upgrade on the Comfort Works side.

Soferia, custom-cut out of Poland

Soferia is a Polish custom-cover vendor with strong reviews in EU markets and a smaller but growing US following. Made to order on a 10-business-day production lead, then international shipping. Pricing lands at $200-400 for most configurations, close to Comfort Works. The fabric library sits between Comfort Works and Bemz for breadth, with a good cotton and linen selection and fewer performance fabrics.

What sets Soferia apart is that they cut covers for discontinued IKEA models as well as current ones, KARLSTAD and EKTORP included. On the SÖDERHAMN the fit is on par with Comfort Works, and the lead time works out about the same once US shipping is in the picture.

Masters of Covers, the budget custom tier

Masters of Covers is the cheap end that still cuts to pattern. Figure $150-300 for most SÖDERHAMN configurations. The fabric library is smaller, about 25 options, and leans toward solid colors and basic weaves. Fit is reportedly good, just without the finish of the pricier tiers.

If you'd rather have the savings than the fabric variety, this is your tier. The covers are cut to the same patterns and the same dimensions the other vendors work from, only the fabric range is thinner.

CoverCouch, mid-tier with 70+ colors

CoverCouch prices between Comfort Works and Masters of Covers, and carries a much wider color range than either at the same fabric quality. They send fabric samples on request, as Comfort Works does and as Bemz does for selected fabrics. If you want a specific non-neutral color, mustard, sage, terracotta, CoverCouch stocks more of them than Comfort Works.

The install really does take a couple of hours

Swapping SÖDERHAMN covers takes noticeably longer than swapping EKTORP covers. The frame is more tailored, the cushions zip into their casings differently, and each modular piece has to come off its connectors before you can re-cover it. The reality is two to four hours for a 3-seat setup, more for a chaise or sectional.

Will Taylor at Bright Bazaar wrote up his experience, washing included: "We washed our white linen slipcover quite regularly and it came out great every single time." Third-party fabric generally washes better than IKEA's originals, which had a reputation for shrinking and warping if you dried them at anything warmer than air-dry.

Cushions are a separate project

None of the cover vendors sell SÖDERHAMN cushion inserts. If the cushions are flat or compressed on top of the covers being worn, take them to a local upholstery shop for re-stuffing with fresh polyfill or foam, usually $150-300 for a whole sofa. Bulk polyester fiber fill from Amazon is the DIY route, much like the EKTORP cushion re-stuff many SÖDERHAMN owners borrow from.

When to skip the covers and replace the sofa

If the SÖDERHAMN frame creaks, the cushion deck sags, or the wood at the connector joints is splitting, new covers won't give you a working sofa. IKEA's current stand-ins are the HYLTARP, the closest match in form factor and slipcover-based at $599-899, or the FINNALA with its pocket-spring construction and deeper seat. If you're done with IKEA, the Article Sven and the Crate & Barrel Petrie last far longer at 3-5x the price.

Most SÖDERHAMN owners with a structurally sound frame should do the cover project. The aftermarket vendors have been cutting these patterns for nearly a decade, the fit is dialed in, and the fabric beats what IKEA ships today.
